Cable is a town in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 836 at the 2000 census. Cable is best known as the starting point of the American Birkebeiner cross-country skiing race and the end point of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival Mountain Bike race.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 185.0 km (71.4 mi ). 179.3 km (69.2 mi ) of it is land and 5.6 km (2.2 mi ) of it (3.05%) is water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 836 people, 381 households, and 230 families residing in the town. The population density was 4.7/km (12.1/mi ). There were 697 housing units at an average density of 3.9/km (10.1/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 99.16% White, 0.24% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.12% of the population.

There were 381 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.76.
