Butternut is a village in Ashland County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 407 at the 2000 census. Butternut is located at 46 °0 50 N, 90 °29 41 W (46.013958, -90.494614) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.1 km (1.6 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 407 people, 197 households, and 102 families residing in the village. The population density was 98.2/km (254.2/mi ). There were 220 housing units at an average density of 53.1/km (137.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the village was 98.28% White and 1.72% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population. There were 197 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.2% were non-families. 43.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
