It lies within the city of Lacey, with Tanglewilde south of Martin Way, and Thompson Place north. Tanglewilde-Thompson Place is within the North Thurston Public Schools district. Elementary schools in the area include Lydia Hawk and Olympic View. The main middle school is Nisqually Middle School. Most high school students in Tanglewilde attend Timberline High School, while students in Thompson Place attend River Ridge High School.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 5,670 people, 2,057 households, and 1,491 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,509.8/km (3,919.1/mi ). There were 2,167 housing units at an average density of 577.0/km (1,497.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.05% White, 7.04% African American, 2.17% Native American, 6.95% Asian, 1.06% Pacific Islander, 3.67% from other races, and 6.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.10% of the population.
