The population was 1,196 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 138.5 km (53.5 mi ). 133.2 km (51.4 mi ) of it is land and 5.3 km (2.0 mi ) of it (3.80%) is water. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 1,196 people, 467 households, and 318 families residing in the town. The population density was 9.0/km (23.3/mi ). There were 763 housing units at an average density of 5.7/km (14.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 97.24% White, 0.25% Asian, 0.92% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.
