Paragonah is a town in Iron County, Utah, United States. The population was 470 at the 2000 census. Paragonah (pronounced locally as pair-a-GOON-ah) was settled by residents from the nearby town of Parowan in the early 1850s. Parowan residents found meadows next to Red Creek that provided ideal locations for farming. The settlement was first known as Red Creek, but the name was later changed to Paragoonah and then Paragonah. There are conflicting sources as to the name's precise meaning, but it is of Paiute Indian origin and apparently is a reference to the water found in the area. Paragonah was incorporated as a town in 1916. Paragonah is located at 37 °53 8 N, 112 °46 27 W (37.885509, -112.774125) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.5 km (0.6 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 470 people, 156 households, and 122 families residing in the town. The population density was 312.9/km (810.2/mi ). There were 197 housing units at an average density of 131.1/km (339.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 98.09% White, 0.21% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races.
