Richland Hills is located at 32 °48 36 N, 97 °13 35 W (32.810080, -97.226369) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 km (3.2 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 8,132 people, 3,197 households, and 2,196 families residing in the city. The population density was 996.8/km (2,584.6/mi ). There were 3,334 housing units at an average density of 408.7/km (1,059.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 90.41% White, 1.44% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.27% Pacific Islander, 4.06% from other races, and 2.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.15% of the population.

There were 3,197 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.99.
