Richmond is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 7,222 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 105.6 km (40.8 mi ). 105.0 km (40.6 mi ) of it is land and 0.6 km (0.2 mi ) of it (0.54%) is water.

Richmond was named for Stephen Richmond.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 7,222 people, 2,537 households, and 2,034 families residing in the town. The population density was 68.7/km (178.1/mi ). There were 2,620 housing units at an average density of 24.9/km (64.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 96.97% White, 0.40% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.23% of the population.

There were 2,537 households out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.3% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.8% were non-families. 14.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.14.
