Luzerne is a borough located five miles (eight km) north of Wilkes Barre in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania near the Susquehanna River. In the early years of the twentieth century, it had coal mines, a foundry, drill factories, flour and feed mills, canning factory, silk mill, etc. In 1900, 3,817 people lived here; in 1910, 5,425 people lived here; and in 1940, 7,082 people lived in Luzerne. The population was 2,952 at the 2000 census. Luzerne is located at 41 °17 2 N, 75 °53 34 W (41.283780, -75.892890) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.8 km (0.7 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 2,952 people, 1,410 households, and 767 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,651.8/km (4,299.3/mi ). There were 1,520 housing units at an average density of 850.5/km (2,213.7/mi ). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.92% White, 0.34% African American, 0.07% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races.
