Freeland is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, 18 miles (29 km) south of Wilkes Barre, and 10 miles northeast of Hazleton. in an agricultural region. Coal-mining had been a chief industry years ago at the turn of the century when the population numbered 5,254 in 1900. In 1910, 6,197 people lived there, and in 1940, 6,593 people lived in Freeland. The population was 3,643 at the 2000 census. Freeland is the highest elevated borough in Pennsylvania at near 2000 feet above sea level

Freeland is located at 41 °1 11 N, 75 °53 45 W (41.019634, -75.895830) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.8 km (0.7 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 3,643 people, 1,611 households, and 968 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,009.4/km (5,230.0/mi ). There were 1,847 housing units at an average density of 1,018.8/km (2,651.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.55% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.33% from other races, and 0.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.96% of the population.
