Carbondale is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. Carbondale is located approximately 15 miles due NE of the city of Scranton in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The population was 9,804 at the 2000 census.

The land area that became Carbondale was developed by William and Maurice Wurts, the founders of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, during the rise of the anthracite coal mining industry in the early 1800s.

Like many other cities and towns in the region, Carbondale has struggled with the demise of the once-prominent coal mining industry that propelled the region into a haven for European immigrants seeking work during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Carbondale is located at 41 °34 19 N, 75 °30 3 W (41.572082, -75.500820) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.4 km (3.2 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 9,804 people, 4,084 households, and 2,564 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,168.3/km (3,027.5/mi ). There were 4,527 housing units at an average density of 539.5/km (1,398.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 98.55% White, 0.23% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.25% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.24% of the population.
