As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 6,220 people, 2,470 households, and 1,756 families residing in the borough. The population density was 142.8/km (369.9/mi ). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.65% White, 0.27% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.40% of the population.

There were 2,470 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% were married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, 28.9% were non-families.. 25.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.04.
