Lafayette is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,586 at the 2000 census. It was the county seat of Yamhill County from its founding in 1843 until 1886, when county residents voted to move it to McMinnville.

Lafayette is located at 45 °14 41 N, 123 °6 48 W (45.244837, -123.113365) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km (0.9 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 2,586 people, 841 households, and 656 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,109.4/km (2,869.9/mi ). There were 888 housing units at an average density of 381.0/km (985.5/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 85.89% White, 0.43% African American, 1.62% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 8.35% from other races, and 2.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.22% of the population.

There were 841 households out of which 44.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 16.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 3.43.
