Towner is a city in McHenry County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of McHenry County GR6. The population was 574 at the 2000 census. Towner was founded in 1886. Despite their similar names, the city of Towner is not in Towner County, North Dakota. Towner is located at 48 °20 43 N, 100 °24 22 W (48.345208, -100.406036) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km (0.8 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 574 people, 295 households, and 158 families residing in the city. The population density was 267.0/km (694.0/mi ). There were 335 housing units at an average density of 155.8/km (405.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 97.91% White, 0.35% African American, 0.35% Native American, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population. There were 295 households out of which 18.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.4% were non-families. 42.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
