Elgin is a city in Grant County, North Dakota in the United States. The population was 659 at the 2000 census. Elgin was founded in 1910. Elgin is located at 46 °24 13 N, 101 °50 41 W (46.403603, -101.844706) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km (0.8 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 659 people, 316 households, and 170 families residing in the city. The population density was 314.1/km (814.5/mi ). There were 379 housing units at an average density of 180.7/km (468.5/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 97.12% White, 1.06% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.76% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population. There were 316 households out of which 18.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 3.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% were non-families. 44.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
