Oakes is a city in Dickey County, North Dakota in the United States. The population was 1,979 at the 2000 census. Oakes was founded in 1886.

The city of Oakes has recently built an updated outdoor pool and a new hospital is also being constructed.

The athletic teams of Oakes High School are called "The Tornadoes", replacing the old name "The Golden Tornadoes."

Oakes is located at 46 °8 14 N, 98 °5 23 W (46.137249, -98.089686) GR1.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 1,979 people, 828 households, and 495 families residing in the city. The population density was 463.1/km (1,203.0/mi ). There were 908 housing units at an average density of 212.5/km (552.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 97.27% White, 0.20% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 1.01% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.58% of the population.
