Portal is a city in Burke County, North Dakota in the United States. The population was 131 at the 2000 census. Portal was founded in 1893.

Portal sits near the Canadian border and is a major port of entry for road and rail traffic. It is one of three 24-hour ports in North Dakota (the others being Dunseith and Pembina ).

Portal is located at 48 °59 44 N, 102 °33 2 W (48.995629, -102.550430) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km (0.6 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 131 people, 63 households, and 43 families residing in the city. The population density was 90.3/km (232.8/mi ). There were 98 housing units at an average density of 67.6/km (174.1/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 99.24% White and 0.76% Native American.

There were 63 households out of which 19.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% were married couples living together, 3.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 31.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.58.
