Lignite is a city in Burke County, North Dakota in the United States. The population was 174 at the 2000 census. Lignite was founded in 1907.

Lignite is located at 48 °52 37 N, 102 °33 45 W (48.876908, -102.562603) GR1.

The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.48.
