Matthews is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and a suburb of the city of Charlotte. The population was 22,127 at the 2000 census. Matthews is located at 35 °7 1 N, 80 °42 59 W (35.116851, -80.716409) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.8 km (14.2 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 22,127 people, 7,837 households, and 6,144 families residing in the town. The population density was 601.2/km (1,557.1/mi ). There were 8,138 housing units at an average density of 221.1/km (572.7/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 90.25% White, 5.34% African American, 0.33% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.50% of the population. There were 7,837 households out of which 43.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
