Cornelius is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 11,969 at the 2000 census.

Cornelius is located at 35 °28 44 N, 80 °53 4 W (35.478954, -80.884532) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.6 km (8.7 mi ). 21.9 km (8.5 mi ) of it is land and 0.7 km (0.3 mi ) of it (3.20%) is water.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 11,969 people, 5,113 households, and 3,374 families residing in the town. The population density was 546.2/km (1,415.5/mi ). There were 5,716 housing units at an average density of 260.9/km (676.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 91.65% White, 5.62% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.24% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.79% of the population.

There were 5,113 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.87.
