Stanley is located at 35 °21 30 N, 81 °5 49 W (35.358447, -81.096815) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.0 km (2.3 mi ). 6.0 km (2.3 mi ) of it is land and 0.43% is water.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 3,053 people, 1,201 households, and 887 families residing in the town. The population density was 512.5/km (1,327.2/mi ). There were 1,303 housing units at an average density of 218.7/km (566.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 89.42% White, 8.42% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.82% of the population.

There were 1,201 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% were non-families. 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.99.
