Mount Holly is located at 35 °17 43 N, 81 °1 10 W (35.295178, -81.019319) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.7 km (8.0 mi ). 20.2 km (7.8 mi ) of it is land and 0.5 km (0.2 mi ) of it (2.51%) is water.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 9,618 people, 4,028 households, and 2,658 families residing in the city. The population density was 477.3/km (1,236.3/mi ). There were 4,241 housing units at an average density of 210.5/km (545.2/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 86.05% White, 9.30% African American, 0.35% Native American, 2.50% Asian, 0.75% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.12% of the population.

There were 4,028 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89.
