Boscawen is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, USA. The population was 3,672 at the 2000 census. The town was incorporated in 1760, named for British Admiral Lord Edward Boscawen. Sometime around 1846, the town's postmaster became one of about a dozen in the country to issue provisional postage stamps before the official issue came out in 1847. The stamps were an adaptation of a postmark, simply reading PAID / 5 / CENTS, typeset in blue on a yellowish paper. These are extremely rare; in 2003, the estimated price at auction was US$225,000. [ citation needed ] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 65.8 km (25.4 mi ). 64.1 km (24.7 mi ) of it is land and 1.8 km (0.7 mi ) of it is water, comprising 2.68% of the town. The highest point in Boscawen is an unnamed summit near the town's northern border, where the elevation reaches approximately 930 feet (283 meters ) above sea level. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 3,672 people, 1,260 households, and 913 families residing in the town. The population density was 57.3/km (148.5/mi ). There were 1,295 housing units at an average density of 20.2/km (52.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 97.74% White, 0.57% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races.
