Kerkhoven is a city in Swift County, Minnesota, roughly 100 miles west from the Twin Cities region of Minneapolis / St. Paul along U.S. Highway 12. It was incorporated as a city in 1881, largely due to the railroad recently built there. The population was 759 at the 2000 census. U.S. Highway 12 crosses through the city. Kerkhoven is home to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg High School on the west side of the community. The current building (which replaced the 1904 McKinley Building complex) was constructed in 1994. Kerkhoven's population has declined during the past 50 years due to the decline of agriculture based jobs. The community is home to Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Evangelical Free churches. Kerkhoven is located at 45 °11 31 N, 95 °18 87 W (45.191957, -95.315958) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 km (0.7 mi ), all land. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 759 people, 313 households, and 210 families residing in the city. The population density was 396.0/km (1,023.5/mi ). There were 338 housing units at an average density of 176.4/km (455.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 94.99% White, 0.13% African American, 0.40% Native American, 4.22% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races.
