Mountain Iron is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, in the heart of the Mesabi Range. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 2,999. Mountain Iron is home to Minntac, the world's largest taconite processing plant. Mountain Iron is owned by the USX Corporation. Mountain Iron is part of the quad cities of Eveleth, Minnesota, Gilbert, Minnesota and Virginia, Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 135.6 km (52.3 mi ). 128.0 km (49.4 mi ) of it is land and 7.5 km (2.9 mi ) of it (5.56%) is water. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 2,999 people, 1,326 households, and 847 families residing in the city. The population density was 23.4/km (60.7/mi ). There were 1,409 housing units at an average density of 11.0/km (28.5/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 98.30% White, 0.77% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races.
