Hibbing is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 17,071 at the 2000 census. McCarthy Beach State Park is nearby. Hibbing was founded in 1893 by the town's namesake, Frank Hibbing.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 483.1 km (186.5 mi ). 470.5 km (181.7 mi ) of it is land and 12.5 km (4.8 mi ) of it (2.60%) is water. By land area, Hibbing is the largest city in Minnesota.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 17,071 people, 7,439 households, and 4,597 families residing in the city. The population density was 36.3/km (94.0/mi ). There were 8,037 housing units at an average density of 17.1/km (44.2/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 97.33% White, 0.46% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population.

There were 7,439 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.86.
