According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.6 km (12.6 mi ). 30.5 km (11.8 mi ) of it is land and 2.0 km (0.8 mi ) of it (6.28%) is water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 1,847 people, 842 households, and 495 families residing in the city. The population density was 60.5/km (156.7/mi ). There were 900 housing units at an average density of 29.5/km (76.3/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 98.21% White, 0.22% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.27% Asian, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.38% of the population.

There were 842 households out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% were non-families. 37.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.88.
