Isle is a city in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 707 at the 2000 census. Its name in the Ojibwe language is "Chi-minising" (at the big island), due to being located right by Malone Island of Mille Lacs Lake, the largest island of that lake. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.6 km (2.5 mi ). 5.4 km (2.1 mi ) of it is land and 1.1 km (0.4 mi ) of it (17.32%) is water. Locally known as the "walleye capital of the world", because of its location on the southeastern shore of beautiful Mille Lacs Lake. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 707 people, 323 households, and 198 families residing in the city. The population density was 130.0/km (336.0/mi ). There were 414 housing units at an average density of 76.1/km (196.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 87.13% White, 11.74% Native American, 0.14% Asian, and 0.99% from two or more races.
