Mora is a city located in Kanabec County, Minnesota. The county name is the derivative of an Indian term described as "snake". Major ancestry groups in Kanabec County are German, Swedish and Norwegian. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,193. It is the county seat of Kanabec County 6. Among other things, Mora plays host to the Mora Vasaloppet, the largest ski race in Minnesota, as well as the Snake River Canoe Race, the Mora Half-Marathon, and the Mora Bicycle Tour. Mora is also the home of a gigantic Dala horse, which commemorates the town's Swedish roots. Mora's sister city is Mora Sweden. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.0 km (4.2 mi ). 10.6 km (4.1 mi ) of it is land and 0.4 km (0.2 mi ) of it is water. The total area is 3.77% water. As of the census 2 of 2004, the estimated population of Kanabec county was 16,056. This was a change of 7.1% from the year 2000. The population density in the year 2000 was 301.4/km (781.2/mi ). There were 1,471 housing units at an average density of 138.9/km (359.9/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 96.71% White, 0.28% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
