Dayton is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 4,699 at the 2000 census. Dayton is mainly in Hennepin County, but a part of the city extends into Wright County as well. Dayton is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Crow Rivers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.2 km (25.2 mi ). 60.7 km (23.5 mi ) of it is land and 4.5 km (1.7 mi ) of it (6.83%) is water. The neighboring cities are Champlin, Minnesota, Anoka, Minnesota, and Rogers, Minnesota. The current mayor is Douglas Anderson. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 4,699 people, 1,550 households, and 1,292 families residing in the city. The population density was 77.4/km (200.4/mi ). There were 1,566 housing units at an average density of 25.8/km (66.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 95.28% White, 0.64% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 1.87% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races.
