Inkster is a city in Wayne County of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 30,115. The area was first settled by non-indigenous people in 1825. A post office named "Moulin Rouge" was established there in December 1857. Robert Inkster, a Scotsman born March 27, 1828, in Lerwick, Shetland, [1] operated a steam sawmill on present-day Inkster Road near Michigan Avenue in the early 1860s. The post office was renamed Inkster in July 1863 and was a station on the Michigan Central Railroad by 1878. It incorporated as a village in 1926 and as a city in 1964. [2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 km (6.3 mi ), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 30,115 people, 11,169 households, and 7,460 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,857.4/km (4,808.1/mi ). There were 12,013 housing units at an average density of 740.9/km (1,918.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 25.14% White, 67.51% African American, 0.41% Native American, 3.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races.
