Gaastra is a city in Iron County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 339. The city is named after Douwe Gaastra, a building contractor and real estate speculator who bought the land in October 1908 and platted the town. It was incorporated as a village in 1919 and as a city in 1949. [1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km (1.6 mi ), all land. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 339 people, 146 households, and 102 families residing in the city. The population density was 79.3/km (205.9/mi ). There were 164 housing units at an average density of 38.4/km (99.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 97.35% White, 0.59% Native American, 0.59% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.88% of the population. There were 146 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
