Monson (pronounced IPA : [ m nsn ©] ) is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,359 at the 2000 census.

Monson was first settled in the year 1715 and was officially incorporated in 1775. Monson was largely a mill town unitl just recently when most of the mills in town closed down due to poor business.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.1 km (44.8 mi ). 114.7 km (44.3 mi ) of it is land and 1.4 km (0.5 mi ) of it (1.20%) is water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 8,359 people, 3,095 households, and 2,203 families residing in the town. The population density was 72.9/km (188.8/mi ). There were 3,213 housing units at an average density of 28.0/km (72.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 97.69% White, 0.67% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
