Steuben is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States. Upon incorporation in 1795 it was named after Baron Frederick William Rudolph Gerald Augustus von Steuben, the Inspector General of the U.S. Army during the Revolutionary War. [1] The population was 1,126 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 193.7 km (74.8 mi ). 111.3 km (43.0 mi ) of it is land and 82.3 km (31.8 mi ) of it (42.51%) is water. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 1,126 people, 459 households, and 314 families residing in the town. The population density was 10.1/km (26.2/mi ). There were 775 housing units at an average density of 7.0/km (18.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 96.98% White, 0.27% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.36% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population. There were 459 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
