East Machias is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States on the East Machias River. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 1,298. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 103.6 km (40.0 mi ). 91.2 km (35.2 mi ) of it is land and 12.4 km (4.8 mi ) of it (12.00%) is water. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 1,298 people, 540 households, and 370 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.2/km (36.9/mi ). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 8.5/km (22.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 98.84% White, 0.31% Native American, 0.08% Asian, and 0.77% from two or more races. There were 540 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
