Guilford is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The town is located on the Piscataquis River and was first settled in 1803. [1] The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.4 km (35.7 mi ). 90.6 km (35.0 mi ) of it is land and 1.8 km (0.7 mi ) of it (1.99%) is water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 1,531 people, 652 households, and 438 families residing in the town. The population density was 16.9/km (43.8/mi ). There were 857 housing units at an average density of 9.5/km (24.5/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 96.28% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.20% of the population.

There were 652 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.79.
