Hampden is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 6,327 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.0 km (39.0 mi ). 98.6 km (38.1 mi ) of it is land and 2.4 km (0.9 mi ) of it (2.36%) is water. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 6,327 people, 2,433 households, and 1,802 families residing in the town. The population density was 64.2/km (166.1/mi ). There were 2,545 housing units at an average density of 25.8/km (66.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 97.91% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population. There were 2,433 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
