According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 105.7 km (40.8 mi ). 104.4 km (40.3 mi ) of it is land and 1.3 km (0.5 mi ) of it (1.20%) is water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 937 people, 374 households, and 289 families residing in the town. The population density was 9.0/km (23.2/mi ). There were 449 housing units at an average density of 4.3/km (11.1/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 97.87% White, 0.32% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.21% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21% of the population.

There were 374 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.7% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 20.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.84.
