Monticello is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, United States on the northern branch of the Meduxnekeag River. The population was 790 at the 2000 census. Originally known as Wellington Township, it was settled in 1830 by General Joel Wellington, who owned it, and incorporated in 1846. [1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.3 km (38.3 mi ). 98.9 km (38.2 mi ) of it is land and 0.4 km (0.2 mi ) of it (0.44%) is water. As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 790 people, 325 households, and 230 families residing in the town. The population density was 8.0/km (20.7/mi ). There were 420 housing units at an average density of 4.2/km (11.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 93.29% White, 4.43% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.89% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.13% of the population. There were 325 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
