According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 203.0 km (78.4 mi ). 198.5 km (76.6 mi ) of it is land and 4.5 km (1.7 mi ) of it (2.21%) is water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there were 3,579 people, 1,523 households, and 1,015 families residing in the town. The population density was 18.0/km (46.7/mi ). There were 1,654 housing units at an average density of 8.3/km (21.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 98.35% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population.

There were 1,523 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.86.
