Avondale is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 5,441. It is home to the large Avondale Shipyards, now controlled by Northrop Grumman.

Avondale is located at 29 °54 16 N, 90 °12 15 W (29.904506, -90.204216) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.0 km (5.8 mi ). 14.1 km (5.4 mi ) of it is land and 0.9 km (0.3 mi ) of it (6.04%) is water.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 5,441 people, 1,726 households, and 1,439 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 385.5/km (998.8/mi ). There were 1,811 housing units at an average density of 128.3/km (332.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the CDP was 63.70% White, 20.25% African American, 0.53% Native American, 12.20% Asian, 1.58% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.80% of the population.
