Argonia is a city in Sumner County, Kansas, United States. The population was 534 at the 2000 census.

On April 4, 1887 Susanna M. Salter was elected mayor of Argonia becoming the first female mayor in the United States.

Argonia is located at 37 °15 55 N, 97 °45 58 W (37.265299, -97.766123) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 km (0.6 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 534 people, 225 households, and 146 families residing in the city. The population density was 317.2/km (818.4/mi ). There were 255 housing units at an average density of 151.5/km (390.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 96.82% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% from other races, and 2.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.19% of the population.

There were 225 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.04.
