Silver Lake is the nearest city to Topeka to the west, along highway 24. Recently Silver Lake has had a higher proportion of its citizens communiting into Topeka.

The next town west along highway 24 is Rossville.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 1,358 people, 538 households, and 394 families residing in the city. The population density was 953.3/km (2,470.7/mi ).
