Coon Rapids is a city in Carroll County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,305 at the 2000 census. In September, 1959, Coon Rapids played a role in promoting d ©tente between the United States and the Soviet Union, when a local man, Roswell Garst, hosted Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev on his farm. Coon Rapids is located at 41 °52 21 N, 94 °40 36 W (41.872462, 94.676787) GR1, along the Middle Raccoon River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.5 km (1.7 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 1,305 people, 543 households, and 346 families residing in the city. The population density was 289.6/km (750.7/mi ). There were 571 housing units at an average density of 126.7/km (328.5/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 99.16% White, 0.61% African American, 0.15% Native American, and 0.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 76.76% of the population. There were 543 households out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
