Illiopolis is a village in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 916 at the 2000 census. On April 23, 2004, the Formosa Plastics plant (formerly Borden) in Illiopolis exploded, killing five people. Linda Hancock (age 56), Joseph Machalek (50), and Larry Graves (47) all from Decatur, IL, and Glen Lyman (49) from Cornland, IL all died at the scene. A fifth worker, Randy Hancock (52) of Decatur, who was the husband of Linda Hancock, passed away on May 13, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL due to injuries he sustained in the blast. [1] [2] Illiopolis is located at 39 °51 5 N, 89 °14 50 W (39.851351, -89.247131) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 km (0.4 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 916 people, 362 households, and 263 families residing in the village. The population density was 785.9/km (2,027.0/mi ). There were 390 housing units at an average density of 334.6/km (863.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the village was 98.91% White, 0.22% Native American, and 0.87% from two or more races.
