Buffalo is located at 39 °51 6 N, 89 °24 33 W (39.851779, -89.409044) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 km (0.4 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 491 people, 199 households, and 135 families residing in the village. The population density was 512.4/km (1,332.2/mi ). There were 208 housing units at an average density of 217.1/km (564.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the village was 97.56% White, 0.61% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.

There were 199 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
