Sciota is a village in McDonough County, Illinois, United States. The population was 58 at the 2000 census. Sciota is located at 40 °33 40 N, 90 °45 3 W (40.561158, -90.750706) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.8 km (0.3 mi ), all land. A grain elevator next to the single rail line is the only industry. Ross Newman was born in Sciota in 1912 and later rose to prominence in the oil industry. Sciota does have postal service, mostly indoor plumbing, and West Prairie High School is located on the outskirts. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 58 people, 27 households, and 19 families residing in the village. The population density was 70.0/km (182.7/mi ). There were 32 housing units at an average density of 38.6/km (100.8/mi ). The racial makeup of the village was 100.00% White. There were 27 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
