Gillespie is a city in Macoupin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,412 at the 2000 census. Gillespie is located at 39 °7 34 N, 89 °48 59 W (39.126023, -89.816403) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km (1.5 mi ), all land. Gillespie does however have a very large lake, Lake Gillespie, just on the outskirts of town. Many people from surrounding towns enjoy fishing, boating, water-skiing and sunbathing at Gillespie Lake. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 3,412 people, 1,452 households, and 936 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.5/km (2,349.3/mi ). There were 1,547 housing units at an average density of 411.9/km (1,065.1/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 98.56% White, 0.32% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races.
