Abingdon is a city in Knox County, Illinois, 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Peoria. The city was first settled in 1828 and was incorporated in 1857. In 1890, 1,321 people lived here; in 1900, 2,022; and in 1910, 2,464. The population was 3,612 at the 2000 census.

Abingdon is located at 40 °48 13 N, 90 °24 3 W (40.803572, -90.400770) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km (1.5 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 3,612 people, 1,422 households, and 984 families residing in the city. The population density was 955.2/km (2,475.1/mi ). There were 1,535 housing units at an average density of 405.9/km (1,051.9/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 98.12% White, 0.55% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.14% of the population.

There were 1,422 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99.
