Warsaw is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,793 at the 2000 census. John Milton Hay, an American statesman, diplomat, author, journalist, and private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln, was raised in Warsaw. He served as United States Secretary of State from 1898 to 1905 under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Warsaw is located at 40 °21 19 N, 91 °25 59 W (40.355173, -91.432928) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.4 km (7.5 mi ). 17.1 km (6.6 mi ) of it is land and 2.3 km (0.9 mi ) of it (11.62%) is water. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 1,793 people, 726 households, and 500 families residing in the city. The population density was 104.6/km (271.0/mi ). There were 807 housing units at an average density of 47.1/km (122.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 98.77% White, 0.11% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races.
