Captiva is a lush tropical like island unlike most other parts of Florida. It is accessible by road from Fort Myers via a causeway. There is a toll to use the causway that goes first to Sanibel Island then north to Captiva. It is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Lee County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total year-round population of 379. Captiva has many large estates with dense foliage so many of the properties are very private. The two lane road crosses a bridge from Sanibel onto Captiva. At times the ocean runs freely to the inland waterway and at other times it is silted in with sand. While the community suffered serious damage due to Hurricane Charley in August 2004, both Captiva and its sister island to the south, Sanibel, have since reclaimed their world-famous beauty, style, welcoming hospitality and casual island attitude. Both have wonderful long beaches that are world renowned for the variety of shells. Shell collecting is a favourite pastime for visitors. The shells are replenished by the surf daily.
